Price Chopper Supermarkets, a medium-size chain of stores located throughout New York, Pennsylvania, and the New England states, recently needed to improve the surface drainage in the truck bay areas at its major distribution facility in Rotterdam, New York, located 10 miles from Albany. The existing area drains were not capturing the rainwater, and ponding was occurring in certain locations.

The retrofit drain installation was planned in order to ensure that water buildup would be effectively captured and removed away from the facility, and that the final drain system would be durable and long lasting under the continual daily heavy traffic of tractor trailers crossing the drain channels.

After studying various options, the ACO HighwayDrain trench drain system was chosen for the initial first phase 2,000 feet of line drainage.

ACO HighwayDrain addresses the demands of Price Chopper’s heavy-duty traffic while effectively managing the drainage solution. Drain channels are cast in 4-foot-long sections with an 8-inch internal width, with the body and grate formed as a single piece with no removable parts. Channels are shipped to the jobsite, where they connect easily together via interconnecting end details to form the necessary run lengths in a trench drain configuration. A high-volume flume outlet connects to catch basins, offering up to 2,867-gallon-per-minute capacity.

ACO manufactures HighwayDrain from polymer concrete, a durable material that offers excellent corrosion resistance to hydrocarbons and other common automotive and road deicing fluids. Polymer concrete is made with polyester resins reinforced with mineral aggregates and fillers to provide up to four times the compressive strength of cement concrete. The HighwayDrain system can withstand the frequent braking and turning of heavy-duty traffic and is independently load tested to DIN 19850 Class E, up to 135,000 pounds, to accommodate the massive weights carried by tractor trailers and other heavy vehicles at the Price Chopper distribution center.

The entire drain retrofit installation was quickly accomplished by sawcutting out a section of the pavement, then suspending the HighwayDrain system within the excavated trench and completing the concrete surround pour.
