Even More Than We Thought

By: Kaspersen, Janice: Stormwater Editor Comments

We’ve all heard at various times about the problem of plastic debris in the ocean: Birds and marine animals eat it, and larger items can entangle and even strangle fish and sea mammals. In part, the danger to animals has led to bans on plastic bags in some cities—although discarded items and even the plastic pellets used in manufacturing plastic goods can pose an even bigger threat.

Now, an oceanographer and a researcher at the University of Delaware have discovered there is more plastic in the water than we thought. Although estimates are usually based on surface water measurements, oceanographer Giora Proskurowski observed how wind drives the debris beneath the surface. He began collecting samples from different levels and found an abundance of plastic not only floating on the surface but also lurking at depths of about 20 meters. He believes there is about two and a half times more debris in the oceans than previously estimated.

His research was done in the North Atlantic, using a tow net to collect samples from specific depths. Surface water is considered to be the top 25 centimeters or 9.8 inches of water; he found debris down as far as 25 meters, or 82 feet.
