Integrating Stormwater Quality Improvements Into Roadway Infrastructure: Can We Build a Better Curb and Gutter?
B21 Tuesday, August 23, 2:00PM – 2:30PM /Platinum Ballroom 9-10
In southern Maine, interest in integrating stormwater quality improvements into municipal roadways is increasing. This presentation provides a detailed overview of a municipal roadway retrofit project implemented on a commercial district roadway in South Portland, Maine. The objective was to develop a stormwater drainage system that could provide conventional stormwater conveyance along with water-quality filtration. Project constraints included limiting construction to within the existing right of way and avoiding the duplication of infrastructure. The design, as well as the challenges of incorporating stormwater filtration into a conventional stormwater conveyance system within a developed, commercial roadway, are discussed, as well as some of the regulatory incentives for this approach..
